His saying, exalted and majestic is He:

﴿Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and remembered Allah much and defended themselves after they were wronged. And those who have wronged will soon know to what [kind of] return they will be returned.﴾

This exception is for the poets of Islam, such as Hassan ibn Thabit, Ka'b ibn Malik, and Abdullah ibn Rawahah, and all who are described by this attribute. It has been narrated from 'Ata' ibn Yasar that these people found what was mentioned earlier about poetry to be difficult, and they mentioned that to the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, so a verse was revealed for the exception in poetry.

And His saying, exalted and majestic is He: ﴿And remembered Allah much﴾ can mean: in their poetry, and this is the interpretation of Ibn Zayd. It can also mean: that this is a creation for them, a habit, and an act of worship, as said by Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him and his father. This is as Labid said when he was asked for poetry: "Indeed, Allah has replaced my poetry with the Qur'an, which is better than it." And every poet in Islam who insults or praises without right, and does not refrain from a vile saying, is included in this verse. And every pious one among them who frequently remembers [Allah] and refrains from all that is blameworthy is included in the exception. And His saying: "and defended themselves" refers to what they said in poetry and otherwise against Quraysh. Qatadah said: "and they defended themselves with what they were wronged."

And the rest of the verse is a warning to the wrongdoers, the disbelievers of Mecca, and a threat to them. And the action "they will be returned" is in "what kind of" due to its delay. And strength and power belong to Allah, exalted and majestic is He, and Allah, blessed and exalted is He, knows best.

This has been completed with the praise of Allah and His success, the tafsir of Surah Ash-Shu'ara.
