Commentary

His saying, exalted and majestic is He:

﴿Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and remembered Allah much and defended themselves after they were wronged. And those who have wronged will soon know to what [kind of] return they will be returned.﴾

This exception is for the poets of Islam, such as Hassan ibn Thabit, Ka'b ibn Malik, and Abdullah ibn Rawahah, and all who are described by this attribute. It has been narrated from 'Ata' ibn Yasar that these people found what was mentioned earlier about poetry to be difficult, and they mentioned that to the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, so a verse was revealed for the exception in poetry.
