160The people of LūT rejected the messengers 161when their brother LūT said to them, “Do you not fear Allah? 162I am an honest messenger for you. 163So fear Allah and obey me. 164I do not claim from you any reward for it. My reward is with none but with the Lord of the worlds. 165Do you go to the males (for having sex) out of the whole universe, 166and leave your wives whom your Lord has created for you? Indeed you are a people who cross (all) limits.” 167They said, “If you do not stop O LūT, you shall be included among the outcast.” 168He said “Indeed, I am annoyed with your act. 169My Lord, save me and my family from what they do.” 170So We saved him and his family, all of them 171except an old woman among those who remained behind. 172Then We destroyed the others, 173and subjected them to a terrible rain. So evil was the rain of those who were warned. 174Surely, in this there is a sign, but most of them are not believers, 175and indeed your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful.

Commentary

His saying, Exalted and Majestic is He: "The people of Lot denied the messengers. When their brother Lot said to them, 'Will you not fear Allah? Indeed, I am to you a messenger trustworthy. So fear Allah and obey me. And I do not ask of you for it any reward. My reward is only from the Lord of the worlds. Will you approach males among the worlds? And leave what your Lord has created for you of your wives? Rather, you are a transgressing people.' They said, 'If you do not desist, O Lot, you will surely be among those expelled.' He said, 'Indeed, I detest your deed.' My Lord, save me and my family from what they do.' So We saved him and his family all, except for an old woman among those who remained behind. Then We destroyed the others. And We rained upon them a rain, and wretched is the rain of those who were warned. Indeed, in that is a sign, but most of them were not believers. And indeed, your Lord is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful." Al-Naqqash said: In the Mushaf of Ibn Mas'ud, Ubayy, and Hafsah, may Allah be pleased with them, it is written: "When Lot said to them" and "their brother" was omitted. The letter 'ya' was shortened in the writing and pronunciation of His saying: "And obey me" to maintain the consistency of the verse endings. Then he stopped them at their heinous disobedience in "approaching males" and leaving the private parts of their wives. The meaning is that the sinner leaves that in a state of sin, not that it means they completely abandoned women. In the reading of Ibn Mas'ud: "What has been made lawful for you by your Lord?" And "transgressing" means: unjust, committing the prohibition. They threatened him with expulsion from his land so that he would not be accused at that time. He only reported that he said: "I detest their deed." And "detesting" means: hating something and leaving it. Then he prayed for safety, and Allah saved him by commanding him to travel at night. His wife helped his people, and a stone struck her, so she perished among those who perished. His saying: "among those who remained behind" means: among those who remained. Either he means: among those who remained from her lineage and her people, and this is the interpretation of Abu Ubaidah, or he means: among those who remained in the punishment that befell them, which is the interpretation of Qatadah. The well-known meaning is that she remained. And "the remnants of time" refers to its future, but Al-A'sha used "the remnants of time" to mean its past in the famous poem of rivalry. And Al-Zahrawi said: It is said for the one who goes, 'ghabir', and for the one who remains, 'ghabir'. And "destruction" means: annihilation by raining stones, and thus the narratives have been reported regarding the stoning of the people of Lot, and the rest of the verse is clear.
