His saying, exalted and majestic is He: ﴿And those who spend the night prostrating and standing for their Lord﴾ ﴿And those who say, 'Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell. Indeed, its punishment is ever adhering.'﴾ ﴿Indeed, it is evil as a place of settlement and residence.﴾ This is a verse that encourages standing at night for prayer. Al-Hasan said: When He finished describing their daytime, He described their nighttime in this. Some people said: Whoever prays the last 'Isha and performs the two rak'ahs of Shaf' and then prays Witr, he is included in this verse. Qadi Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said: Except that it is an incomplete inclusion. Abu al-Barhamsa read: 'prostrating.' And He praised them, blessed and exalted is He, for their supplication in averting the punishment of Hell, as that is evidence of the correctness of their belief and their faith, and according to their deeds. And 'adhering' means: heavy and burdensome. It is like the love that is burdensome, and from it is the saying of Al-A'sha: If He punishes, it will be adhering, and if He gives abundantly, then He does not care. And the saying of Bishr ibn Abu Khazim: And on the day of the battle and on the day of the abandonment, it was punishment and it was adhering. And the majority of people read: 'residence' with a Dhamma on the meme, from 'to reside.' From it is the saying of the poet: Greet the residence and greet the inhabitant of the house. And a group read: 'residence' with a Fatha on the meme, from 'to stand.' So Hell is a place of residence for them, and the first is more eloquent and more famous.
