Commentary
His saying, exalted and majestic is He:
﴿The evil ones are for the evil ones, and the evil ones are for the evil ones; and the good ones are for the good ones, and the good ones are for the good ones.﴾ ﴿Those are free from what they say. For them is forgiveness and a noble provision.﴾
The interpreters have differed regarding the described in this verse with respect to the evil and the good. Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, and Mujahid, and Al-Dhahak, and Qatadah said: It refers to sayings and actions. Then this group differed. Some of them said: The meaning is that the evil words and actions are only said and accepted by the evil ones among the people. So they are for them and they are for it in this way. Likewise, the good ones are for the good ones. And some of them said: The meaning is that the evil words and actions do not befit or stick at the throwing of the thrower and the casting of the caster except with the evil ones among the people. So they are for them and they are for it in this way.
And Ibn Zayd said: The described by the evil and the good are women and men. And the verse is in the manner of that which has preceded, which is His saying, exalted is He: ﴿The fornicator does not marry except a fornicator.﴾ [An-Nur: 3]. So the meaning of this is the distinction between the ruling of Abdullah ibn Ubayy and his likes and the ruling of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, and the virtuous companions, may Allah be pleased with them, and his Ummah. That is: The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, is good, so Allah has not made for him except every good thing, and those are evil, so they are the people of the evil women.
(p-367) The judge Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
And with this verse, it was said to the wives of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him: The pure ones are free from blame.
And His saying, exalted is He: "Those are" refers to "the good ones" in His saying: ﴿And the good ones are for the good ones.﴾ And Al-Nikash said: The reference in ﴿Those are free from blame﴾ is to Safwan and Aisha, may Allah be pleased with them, and He gathered them in the pronoun in accordance with His saying, exalted is He: ﴿So if he has brothers.﴾ [An-Nisa: 11] and the intended meaning is two brothers.
The judge Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
And in this example with the verse of brotherhood, there is consideration, and according to these meanings, the intended meaning of the pronoun in "they say" is determined, so reflect upon it. Then Allah, exalted is He, promised the good ones among the believers forgiveness at the reckoning and a noble provision in Paradise.
