Commentary
His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "And among the devils are those who dive for him and do work other than that. And We were protecting them." "And Ayyub when he called upon his Lord, 'Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.'" "So We responded to him and removed what was upon him of adversity, and We gave him his family and the like of them with him, as a mercy from Us and a lesson for the worshippers."
It is possible that his saying: "they dive for him" is in the position of نصب (accusative) meaning: and We made some of the devils subservient. It is also possible that it is in the position of رفع (nominative) as a subject. This is consistent with the two previous readings in His saying, glorified and exalted is He: "And to Sulayman the wind" in both the accusative and nominative. And His saying, exalted is He: "they dive" is a plural meaning "from" not according to its wording. And "diving" means entering into water and earth, and the work other than that includes construction and other crafts and services. And His saying: "And We were protecting them," it is said: its meaning is: from the corruption of what they produced, for they had a desire for that, had it not been for what Allah, exalted and majestic is He, placed between them and that. And it is said: its meaning is: just and present, meaning that no one among them deviates from Our knowledge and subservience.
And His saying, exalted is He: "And Ayyub" is best understood as being in the accusative case due to an implied verb, which is: remember Ayyub. In the story of Ayyub, blessings and peace be upon him, there is much length and difference among the interpreters. The summary of that is that it has been narrated that Ayyub, blessings and peace be upon him, was a prophet sent to a people. He had abundant wealth from camels, cattle, and sheep. He was from the land of the Levant. He remained in that state for a period of time. Then, when Allah, blessed and exalted is He, intended his trial and testing, He permitted Iblis to corrupt his wealth. Iblis took advantage of his offspring, and they burned all his wealth and blessings. Whenever he was informed of something from that, he praised Allah, exalted is He, and said: It is a loan that its owner has taken back, and the One who bestowed it. When Iblis saw that, he came and informed Allah of his inability to affect him. So Allah permitted him to destroy his children and relatives, and he did so entirely. Ayyub, blessings and peace be upon him, continued in his gratitude. Iblis informed him of his inability, so Allah, exalted is He, permitted him to afflict him in his body. He restricted his tongue, eyes, and heart. Iblis came while he was prostrating and blew into his nose a breath from which his body was burned. Allah made it a disease in his body. When it became severe and spread, the people expelled him from among them and placed him on a dung heap. No human remained with him except for his wife. It is said that she was the daughter of Yusuf the truthful, and it is said that her name was Rahmah. It is said about Ayyub that he was from the Children of Israel, and it is said that he was from the Romans, from the descendants of Esau. His wife would go out to provide for him and bring him food and take care of him. He remained in this torment for a long time; it is said thirty years, and it is said eighteen years, and it is said twelve years, and it is said nine years, and it is said three years. Throughout all of that, he was patient and grateful until there came to him - as has been narrated - three of those who had believed in him. They honored him with their words and admonished him, saying: Your Lord has not done this to you except for the evil within you. Ayyub responded to them at the end of their words with words implying that he was humiliated and unable to present a proof or express his grievance. Allah, exalted is He, addressed him, reproaching him for this statement and clarifying that no one has a proof against Allah, nor is He questioned about what He does. Then He made it known to him, glorified and exalted is He, that He had permitted the improvement of his condition and returned to him with His grace. So Ayyub, blessings and peace be upon him, prayed at that time, and his supplication was answered.
It is narrated that Ayyub, peace be upon him, remained patient and did not call out for relief from what afflicted him. It was reported that worms would fall from him, and he would push them away with his hand until a group of people who opposed him passed by and mocked him. He felt pain from that and then called out, and his call was answered. His wife was absent from him for some of her affairs, so Allah caused a spring to gush forth for him and commanded him to drink from it, and his inner self was healed. He was commanded to wash, and his outer self was healed, and he was returned to his best state. He was brought the best of garments, and a leg of gold grasshopper was sent upon him, and he began to scoop it into his garment. Allah, the Exalted, called out to him: "O Ayyub, did I not enrich you from this?" He said: "Yes, O Lord, but I have no need of Your blessings." While he was in that state, his wife came and did not recognize him in his new appearance, and she was distressed, thinking that he had been taken away from her, and she began to lament. He said to her: "What is the matter with you, O woman?" She was in awe of him due to his beautiful appearance, and she said: "I lost a sick person who was here in this place, and the landmarks of the place have changed." She looked at him during the conversation and recognized Ayyub. She said to him: "Are you Ayyub?" He said to her: "Yes," and he embraced her and cried. It was narrated that he did not part from her until Allah showed him all his wealth present before him.
People differed regarding his family and children whom Allah had given him. It was said that all of that was in this world, and Allah restored his sight and his children to him in their original forms, and He made for him the like of them in the Hereafter. It was said: Rather, he was given all of that in this world, in terms of family and wealth.
And His saying, the Exalted: "And a reminder for the worshippers" means: and a reminder and admonition, and no one worships Allah except a believer. The reminder is indeed in his trial, and the mercy is in the removal of that. And His saying: "Indeed, harm has touched me" is to be understood as: "That harm has touched me," so the preposition was omitted, and "indeed" remained in the position of accusative. It was narrated that the reason for Ayyub's trial, peace be upon him, was that he entered with a group of people to a king who was oppressing them, and the people were harsh with him, and Ayyub softened his words out of fear for his wealth. So Allah punished him for that. It was narrated that it was said to him: "Why do you not call out in wellness?" He would say: "I am too shy before Allah to ask Him to remove His punishment from me until I experience in it what I experienced of ease." And he was afflicted with calamity, as it was reported, when he was eighty years old.
