Commentary
His saying, exalted and majestic is He: "And We gave Lot judgment and knowledge, and We saved him from the city that was committing abominations. Indeed, they were a wicked people, disobedient. And We admitted him into Our mercy. Indeed, he was among the righteous." And "And Noah, when he called out before, We responded to him, and We saved him and his family from the great distress. And We supported him against the people who denied Our signs. Indeed, they were a wicked people, so We drowned them all."
The meaning is: And We gave Lot, for he is an object of a hidden verb indicated by the apparent context. And "judgment" is the separation of judgment among people, and "abominations" refers to the act of men and their filthiness in their gatherings, among other things of their disbelief. And His saying regarding Noah, peace be upon him: "before" refers to the addition to Abraham and Lot, peace be upon them. And "the great distress" is the drowning and what befell his people of destruction by his supplication against them which was answered. And His saying, glorified and exalted is He: "And We supported him" means that most of his support was in the form of salvation, and the defeat of his people was not by his own hand but by an external command, so it was appropriate to say: "We supported him against," and "against" cannot be used here as it can in the matter of Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, with his people.
The judge Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said: The mention of these prophets, peace be upon them, serves as a parable for the story of Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, with his people. The salvation of the prophets and the destruction of their deniers is a warning to the disbelievers from Quraysh.
