Tafsir for verses: 21:17, 21:18
17Had We intended to have a pastime, We would have had it from Our own, if We were ever to do so. 18Instead, We launch the truth against falsehood, which gets it smashed, and in no time it is gone. Alas to you for what you describe!

Commentary

His saying, exalted and glorified is He:

﴿If We had intended to take a pastime, We could have taken it from Us, if We were to do so﴾ ﴿Rather, We hurl the truth at falsehood, and it crushes it, and behold, it vanishes. And woe to you for what you describe﴾

The apparent meaning of this verse is a response to those among the disbelievers who spoke about the matter of Maryam and what resembles it from disbelief. Exalted is Allah above the words of the falsifiers. And 'pastime' in this verse refers to the woman. It has been narrated that in some dialects of the Arabs, it refers to the wife. And 'if' in His saying: ﴿if We were to do so﴾ may be understood as conditional, meaning: if We were to do so, and We are not like that. And for the speakers here, there is an objection and separation. It may also be understood as negating, meaning 'not', and all of this has been said.

And 'the truth' is general in the Qur'an, the message, the law, and everything that is true. And 'falsehood' is also general in the same way. And 'it crushes it' means: it strikes its brain, and that is a destruction for mankind. So likewise, the truth destroys falsehood. And 'woe' means: disgrace and distress. It has been said that it is the name of a valley in Hell, and that is what is intended in this verse. And this is addressed to the disbelievers who described Allah, blessed and exalted is He, with that which is not permissible for Him and that which is not befitting Him. Exalted is Allah, blessed and sanctified is He, and He is far removed from their words. Rather, He is as He has described Himself, and above what His creation has described Him with; there is no Lord other than Him.
