ثُمَّ ٱجۡتَبَٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَتَابَ عَلَيۡهِ وَهَدَىٰ ١٢٢ ﴿122 قَالَ ٱهۡبِطَا مِنۡهَا جَمِيعَۢاۖ بَعۡضُكُمۡ لِبَعۡضٍ عَدُوّٞۖ فَإِمَّا يَأۡتِيَنَّكُم مِّنِّي هُدٗى فَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَ هُدَايَ فَلَا يَضِلُّ وَلَا يَشۡقَىٰ ١٢٣ ﴿123 وَمَنۡ أَعۡرَضَ عَن ذِكۡرِي فَإِنَّ لَهُۥ مَعِيشَةٗ ضَنكٗا وَنَحۡشُرُهُۥ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ أَعۡمَىٰ ١٢٤ ﴿124 قَالَ رَبِّ لِمَ حَشَرۡتَنِيٓ أَعۡمَىٰ وَقَدۡ كُنتُ بَصِيرٗا ١٢٥ ﴿125 قَالَ كَذَٰلِكَ أَتَتۡكَ ءَايَٰتُنَا فَنَسِيتَهَاۖ وَكَذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡيَوۡمَ تُنسَىٰ ١٢٦ ﴿126
122Thereafter his Lord chose him. So He accepted his repentance and gave (him) guidance. 123He said (to ’Ādam and Iblīs), “Go down from here, all of you, some of you enemies of some others. Then, should some guidance come to you from Me, the one who follows My guidance shall not go astray, nor shall he be in trouble. 124As for the one who turns away from My message, he shall have a straitened life, and We shall raise him blind on the Day of Judgment.” 125He will say, “My Lord, why did you raise me blind while I was sighted?” 126He will say, “In the similar manner as Our signs came to you, and you had ignored them. In the same way you will be ignored today.”

His saying, exalted and majestic is He:

﴿Then his Lord chose him and accepted his repentance and guided him﴾ ﴿He said, 'Descend from it all together; some of you are enemies to others. So if there comes to you guidance from Me, then whoever follows My guidance will not go astray nor will he be unhappy﴾ ﴿And whoever turns away from My remembrance, indeed, he will have a difficult life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind﴾ ﴿He said, 'My Lord, why have You gathered me blind while I was [once] seeing?'﴾ ﴿He said, 'Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot them; and thus will this Day be forgotten.'﴾

And in general, it is the punishment of the grave as it has been narrated regarding it.

And the carrying of this group on this interpretation is that the wording of the verse necessitates that the constricted life before the Day of Resurrection is by His saying: ﴿And We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind﴾, and by His saying, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿And certainly the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe and everlasting﴾ [Ta-Ha: 127]. And a group said: Rather, the constricted life is in the Hereafter, which is their punishment in Hell and their eating of the Zaqqum and others. And Allah, glorified and exalted is He, mentioned that as a warning for them. Then He informed about another state that is also on the Day of Resurrection, which is their gathering blind. Then comes His saying: ﴿And certainly the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe and everlasting﴾ [Ta-Ha: 127]. The meaning of what we have mentioned regarding the constricted life and blindness and the like is His punishment in the Hereafter, and it is more severe and everlasting than all that is subject to suspicion and imagination.
