Commentary
His saying, exalted and glorified is He:
﴿And when those who associated partners with Allah see their partners, they will say, 'Our Lord, these are our partners whom we used to invoke besides You.' Then they will throw the saying to them, 'Indeed, you are liars.'﴾ ﴿And they will throw themselves to Allah on that Day in submission, and what they used to invent will abandon them.﴾ ﴿Those who disbelieved and hindered from the path of Allah, We will increase them in punishment above the punishment for what they used to cause corruption.﴾ ﴿And the Day We will raise in every nation a witness against them from among themselves, and We will bring you as a witness against these, and We have sent down to you the Book as clarification for all things and guidance and mercy and good tidings for the Muslims.﴾
He informed, glorified and exalted is He, that when they see on the Day of Resurrection with their eyes the idols and the statues and every object of worship besides Allah - because they will be gathered with them as a rebuke to them in front of the witnesses - they will point to them and say, 'These are what we used to worship besides Allah.' It is as if they intended by this to blame the worshipped ones and to include them in the sin. They added the partners to themselves because they made them partners. This is like when one man describes another as being good, and you say to him, 'What did your good one do?' So you attributed it to him based on how he described him with that attribute. The pronoun in 'the saying' refers back to the partners. So whoever was among the worshipped ones from among humans will throw the customary saying with his tongue, and whatever was among the inanimate objects will speak by the power of Allah in denying the polytheists in their description of them as deities and partners to Allah. In this, the lie occurred, not in the worship. Al-Tabari said: The meaning is, 'Indeed, you are liars; we did not call you to our worship.'
Qadi Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
It is as if they denied them in blaming them.
And His saying: ﴿And they will throw themselves to Allah﴾, the pronoun in 'they threw' refers back to the polytheists, and the meaning is: They submitted to Him, and they threw away what was in their hands and humbled themselves to His judgment, and they had no way to escape or resist. And 'submission' means submission. The majority read: 'submission' with the 'lam' opened, and Ya'qub narrated from Abu Amr with the 'lam' being silent, and Mujahid read: 'the submission' with the 's' and 'l' being pronounced.
And His saying: ﴿Those who disbelieved﴾ in the context of His saying: ﴿And what they used to fabricate has strayed from them﴾ indicates that the punishment of Allah has befallen them and they have encountered His wrath. Then he explained it and informed that those who disbelieved and prevented others from entering the religion and following the path of Allah, He increased them in punishment greater than the general punishment for all disbelievers as a consequence of their corruption. It is possible that His saying: "Those" is a substitute for the pronoun in "they used to fabricate," and "We increased them" is an independent action of His informing. It is also possible that "Those" is the beginning of "We increased them." It has been narrated that Allah, glorified and exalted is He, unleashed upon them scorpions and snakes with fangs like tall palm trees, as said by Ibn Mas'ud. And 'Ubaid ibn 'Umayr said: Snakes with fangs like palm trees, and scorpions like the dappled mules, and similar to this. It has been narrated from Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As, may Allah be pleased with them both, that Hell has shores where these snakes and scorpions are. The disbelievers flee to the shores from the fire, and these snakes and scorpions receive them, so they flee from them to the fire, and they follow them until they find the heat of the fire and then return. He said: And they are in groups.
And His saying, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿And the Day We raise﴾ in it is a warning, and the meaning is: Remember the Day We will raise in every nation a witness against it, which is its messenger who witnessed in the world its denial and disbelief, its faith and guidance. It is permissible for Allah to raise a witness from the righteous along with the messengers. Some of the companions said: If you see someone committing a sin, then stop him. If he obeys you, then well and good; if not, you will be a witness against him on the Day of Resurrection.
His saying: ﴿From themselves﴾ is based on the fact that the sending of the messengers is likewise in this world. This is because the messenger who is from the nation in language, conduct, understanding of intentions, and indications is capable of making them understand and responding to their opposition. This cannot be achieved by anyone who is not from the nation to whom he is sent. Therefore, Allah has never sent a prophet except from the nation to which he was sent. And His saying: "These" refers to this nation. And "the Book": the Qur'an. And His saying: "A clarification" is a noun and not a source, like deficiency, and the sources in such an interpretation are open like repetition and reiteration. "A clarification" is in the accusative case as a state. And His saying: ﴿For everything﴾ refers to what we need in the law and what is necessary in the religion, such as what is lawful and unlawful, calling to Allah, and warning of His punishment. This is a limitation of what the statements of the interpreters necessitate. Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "In this Qur'an has been revealed every knowledge, and everything has been clarified for us in the Qur'an," and he recited this verse.
