Commentary
'He is the One who sends down from the sky water for you. From it is a drink and from it is a tree in which you graze.' 'He causes crops to grow for you with it, and the olive tree, the date palm, and the grapes, and from all fruits. Indeed, in that is a sign for a people who reflect.' 'And He has subjected to you the night and the day, and the sun and the moon, and the stars are subjected by His command. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who understand.' This is a recounting of the favor of Allah in the rain. His saying: 'And from it is a tree' means: it will be gradually, as it waters the earth and causes the trees to grow from this watering. This is a figure of speech, as the poet said: 'The humps of the camels in their pastures.' And as another called grass 'sky' in his saying: 'When the sky descends upon the land of a people, we graze it, even if they are angry.' Abu Ishaq said: It is said for everything that grows on the earth: 'tree.' And Ikrimah said: Do not eat the price of the tree, for it is [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: musht] meaning the pasture. 'And you graze' means: you let your livestock graze. Grazing is from the act of grazing, and it is said for livestock: 'the grazing ones.' The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'In the grazing of sheep is zakat.' It is said: The man grazed his livestock when he let them graze, and he also grazed them, so they grazed. From that is the saying of Al-A'sha: 'And the people walked with the pillars to the pasture, and the grazier was exhausted where the pasture was.' And from the saying of another: 'Like the son of Baz'ah or another like him, 'O son of the grazier of the camels.' Meaning: the herder of the camels. The interpreters explained 'you graze' as 'you let graze.' The majority read: 'He causes to grow' with a ya, meaning: Allah causes to grow. It is said: The tree grew and Allah caused it to grow. It is said: The tree grew meaning it grew. Al-Asma'i used to reject that and accuse the poem of Zuhayr which contains: 'Until when the vegetation grew.' And Abu Bakr read from Asim: 'We cause to grow' with a noon of greatness. He specifically mentioned, glorified and exalted is He, these four because they are the noblest of what grows and the most comprehensive for benefits. Then he generalized with His saying: 'From all fruits.' Then he referred the saying to the reflection on the variations of plants and trees, which is a place of reflection in their colors, the consistency of their creation, and the harmony of their delicacies. So glorified is the great Creator. And His saying, exalted is He: 'And He has subjected to you the night and the day.' The verse. The majority read by applying 'subjected' to all that was mentioned, and they made 'subjected' accusative as a confirmed state, as He, exalted is He, said: 'He is the truth, confirming.' And as the poet said: 'I am the son of Darah, known by it is my lineage.'
And similarly, Ibn 'Amir read: "And the sun, the moon, and the stars are made subservient" with the raising of all of this. And Hafs from 'Asim read: "And the stars are made subservient" with the raising, and he lowered what came before that. The meaning in this verse is that these creations are made subservient in a manner by which the benefit of humans continues from the tranquility at night and the livelihoods and other things during the day. As for the benefits of the sun and the moon, they are more than can be counted. And as for the stars, they are guides. For this reason, they are counted among the blessings upon the children of Adam. And among the blessings is their light at times. Al-Zajjaj said: And he knew the number of years and the calculations by them.
Qadi Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
And in this, there is consideration.
Ibn Mas'ud, Al-A'mash, and Talhah ibn Masrif read: "And the winds are made subservient" in the place of "and the stars." Then he said: "Indeed, in that are signs" for the greatness of the matter, because each one of what was mentioned is a sign in itself and does not share with the other. And he said in the previous verse: "For a sign" because one thing encompasses those four, which is the plants. And likewise in mentioning what He created for their ease by addition. And also, it is in the meaning of "signs," one intended for the plural.
