Commentary
His saying, exalted and glorified is He: "And those who are patient, seeking the face of their Lord, and establish prayer, and spend from what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, and repel evil with good, those will have the good consequence of the home." "Gardens of Eternity, they will enter them, and whoever is righteous among their forefathers, their spouses, and their descendants, and the angels will enter upon them from every gate." "Peace be upon you for what you patiently endured. And excellent is the consequence of the home."
Patience for the sake of Allah includes enduring calamities, illnesses, acts of worship, and resisting desires and the like. "Seeking" is in the accusative case, either as a source or as a purpose for it. The "face" in this verse appears to refer to the direction that is intended by Him, the Most High, with good deeds so that they may receive reward for them. This is like saying: the army set out for such and such a direction. This is the most apparent meaning, with the possibility of other interpretations. "Establishing prayer" means performing it in its completeness, and the prayer here refers to the obligatory prayer.
And His saying, the Most High: "And spend" means to assist those in need. "Secretly" refers to what is spent voluntarily, and "publicly" refers to what is spent from the obligatory zakat, because all voluntary spending is better when done discreetly. And His saying: "And repel evil with good" means: they repel what they see of harm from others with that which is better. It is said that they repel it by saying "There is no deity but Allah" to counter their polytheism, and it is said that they repel the evils of people with greetings of peace.
Qadi Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said: In general, they do not respond to evil with evil. This is contrary to the character of ignorance. It has been narrated that this verse was revealed about the Ansar, but it is general thereafter for anyone who possesses these qualities.
And His saying: "the good consequence of the home" can be understood as the good consequence of the home of this world. Then He explained "the consequence" by saying: "Gardens of Eternity," as the consequence encompasses both the state of good and the state of evil. It is possible that He means: the good consequence of the home of the Hereafter, that is, the consequence of Paradise in the Hereafter is for them. The majority read: "Gardens of Eternity," while Al-Nakha'i read: "A Garden of Eternity they will enter" with a damma on the ya and a fatha on the kha. "Gardens" is an alternative to "the consequence" and an explanation of it. "Eternity" is the city of Paradise and its center, and from it are the "Gardens of Residence," from "to reside in a place" when one stays there for a long time, and from it are the mines. It is said that the Gardens of Eternity are the dwelling of the Prophets, martyrs, and scholars only, as said by Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As, and it is narrated that it has five thousand gates.
And His saying: ﴿And whoever is righteous﴾ means: whoever does good deeds and believes, this was said by Mujahid and others. It is also possible that it means: whoever is righteous for that by the decree of Allah, glorified and exalted is He, and His prior knowledge. Al-Tabari narrated in the description of the entrance of the angels (p-201) hadiths that we did not elaborate on due to the weakness of their chains. The meaning is: they say: peace be upon you. The phrase 'they say' was omitted for brevity and conciseness, as the apparent meaning indicates it. The meaning is: this is due to what you have patiently endured. The meaning of ﴿the outcome of the abode﴾ is as previously mentioned in the two meanings. The majority read: 'So excellent' with a kasra on the noon and a sukoon on the 'ayn. Yahya ibn Thawb read it with a fathah on the noon and a kasra on the 'ayn. A group said: the meaning of ﴿the outcome of the abode﴾ is that they were made to succeed to Paradise from Hellfire. Qadi Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said: This interpretation is based on a hadith that was reported, which is: 'Every man in Paradise had a known place in Hellfire, but Allah turned him away from it to bliss. He will be shown it, and it will be said to him: this is the place of your seat, and Allah has replaced it for you with Paradise because of your faith, obedience, and patience.'
