Commentary
'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' He said: O my son, do not relate your vision to your brothers, lest they devise against you a plan. Indeed, Satan is a manifest enemy to man. And thus will your Lord choose you and teach you the interpretation of narratives and complete His favor upon you and upon the family of Jacob, as He completed it upon your forefathers, Abraham and Isaac. Indeed, your Lord is Knowing and Wise. This verse indicates that Jacob, peace be upon him, sensed from his sons the envy of Joseph and their animosity towards him. So he forbade him from recounting the vision to them for fear that this would ignite the malice in their hearts, and they would devise a scheme for his destruction. From this, and from their actions towards Joseph - whose mention will come - it appears that they were not prophets at that time. It has been reported in the book of al-Tabari from Ibn Zayd that they were prophets, but this is refuted by the certainty of the infallibility of the prophets from worldly envy, and from disobedience to parents, and exposing a believer to destruction and the likelihood of killing him.
