'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful'

Tafsir of Surah Al-Ma'un

And it is Meccan without disagreement that I know of. Al-Thalabi said: It is Medinan.

His saying, exalted is He:

﴿Have you seen the one who denies the religion?﴾ ﴿So that is the one who drives away the orphan.﴾ ﴿And does not encourage the feeding of the poor.﴾ ﴿So woe to those who pray.﴾ ﴿Those who are heedless of their prayers.﴾ ﴿Those who show off.﴾ ﴿And prevent the small kindness.﴾

This is a stopping point and a reminder for the soul of the listener, everyone who knows him by this description. Abu Amr hamzated "

," contrary to others. Nafi' and others did not hamzate it. And "

:" is the recompense, reward and punishment, and the accounting here is close to the recompense.

Then He, exalted is He, said: ﴿So that is the one who drives away the orphan.﴾ This means: you will find in him these bad traits. And "

," means to push him away violently. This could mean: from feeding him and being good to him, or it could mean: from his rights and his wealth, which is more severe. Abu Rija' read: "

:" with a light opening of the dal, meaning: he does not do good to him. And His saying, exalted is He: ﴿And does not encourage the feeding of the poor.﴾ means: he does not command charity, nor does he see that as correct.

It is narrated that this Surah was revealed regarding some of those who were forced into Islam in Mecca, who did not establish it, and they were tempted and fell into temptation. They had this character of oppression and harshness towards the poor. Perhaps some of them would pray sometimes with the Muslims out of compulsion and confusion. So Allah, exalted is He, said about them: ﴿So woe to those who pray.﴾ ﴿Those who are heedless of their prayers.﴾ Ibn Jurayj said: Abu Sufyan would sacrifice a camel every week. A young orphan came to him and struck him with a stick, so this Surah was revealed about him. (p-696) Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: 'I asked the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, about those who are heedless of their prayers. He said: " , " they are those who delay it beyond its time." : -1 ,

Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said: It is what people use among themselves, like the axe, the bucket, the vessels, the knife, and similar items. This was also said by Al-Hasan, Qatadah, Ibn Al-Hanifiyyah, Ibn Zayd, Al-Dahhak, and Ibn Abbas. Ibn Al-Musayyib said: Ma'oon - in the language of Quraysh - is wealth. 'And the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, was asked: What is the thing that is not permissible to withhold? He said: "Water, fire, and salt,"' narrated by Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her. In some narrations, there is an addition: "and the needle and the dough." Al-Farra' reported from some Arabs that Ma'oon is water. Ibn Mas'ud said: "We used to consider Ma'oon in the time of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, to be the borrowing of the pot, the bucket, and similar items." The interpretation of Surah [Al-Ma'oon] is complete, and all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
