His saying, exalted and glorified is He: "So when He saved them, at once they were unjustly transgressing in the land. O mankind, your transgression is only against yourselves, enjoyment of the life of this world. Then to Us is your return, and We will inform you of what you used to do."

"They are unjustly transgressing": meaning they are corrupting and disbelieving. Transgression is exceeding limits and corrupt actions. He confirmed this by saying: "unjustly". Then He began with admonition and condemnation of transgression in the briefest wording. His saying: "enjoyment of the life" is in the nominative case, and this is the reading of the majority. This is based on the news of the subject, and the subject is "your transgression". It is also valid for "enjoyment" to be in the nominative based on an implied subject, the meaning of which is: that is enjoyment, or it is enjoyment. The news of transgression is His saying: "against yourselves". Hafs read from Asim, and Harun from Ibn Kathir, and Ibn Abi Ishaq: "enjoyment" in the accusative case, which is a verbal noun in the position of an adverbial phrase related to transgression. The news of transgression - on this - is omitted, the meaning of which is: it is blameworthy or disliked, and the like. It is not permissible for the news to be His saying: "against yourselves" because it would separate the verbal noun from what it acts upon with a foreign element. It is valid for "enjoyment" to be in the accusative case based on an implied verb, the meaning of which is: you enjoy the enjoyment of the life of this world. Ibn Abi Ishaq read: "enjoyment of the life of this world" in the accusative case in both instances. The meaning of the verse is: your transgression and corruption are harmful to you, and it is in the state of this world, then you will face its punishment in the Hereafter. Sufyan ibn Uyaynah said: "Your transgression is only against yourselves, enjoyment of the life of this world" means: its punishment is hastened for you in the life of this world. Based on this, they said: transgression brings down its people.

Qadi Abu Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, said: They said: the transgressor is struck down due to His saying, exalted and glorified is He: "Then he was wronged, Allah will surely aid him" [Al-Hajj: 60], and due to the saying of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him: "There is no sin whose punishment is hastened more than transgression." A group read: "and We will inform you" on the pronoun of the exalted speaker. Another group read: "and He will inform you" on the pronoun of the absent, and the intended meaning is Allah, exalted and glorified is He.
