And when he mentioned good, he followed it with its opposite and said: ﴿And whoever does﴾ meaning whoever it may be ﴿an atom's weight of evil﴾ meaning from the aspect of evil ﴿will see it﴾ and what is above it. The believer sees it and knows that it has been forgiven for him, so his joy intensifies. The disbeliever sees it, and his sorrow and grief intensify. The atom is the small ant or the speck that you see [a bird] in the ray of light coming from the window. And its end returns to its beginning by the reporting of news and the revealing of secrets. It has been reported in the hadith of the Bedouin that this surah encompasses this last verse. Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said: It is the most decisive verse in the Qur'an. The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, used to call it the unique encompassing one. From the understanding of this, he did not belittle any sin, no matter how small, because it accumulates with similar ones and becomes great, as he said, blessings and peace be upon him, to Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her: 'Beware of belittling sins, for they have a seeker from Allah.' And it has been narrated as I mentioned in my book 'Masa'id al-Nazar fi al-Ishraf 'ala Maqasid al-Suwar' in the hadith [p-209] 'Indeed, it is equivalent to half of the Qur'an.' And in another hadith that it is equivalent to a quarter of the Qur'an, and there is no contradiction. The first looked at it from the perspective that the rulings are divided into the rulings of this world and the rulings of the Hereafter. This surah encompasses the rulings of the Hereafter in general and adds to the Al-Qari'a by bringing forth the weights and that everyone will see all that he has done. The second looked at it considering what the hadith narrated by Al-Tirmidhi from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'No servant believes until he believes in four: he bears witness that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah who was sent with the truth, and he believes in death, and he believes in resurrection after death, and he believes in destiny.' This hadith necessitates that belief in resurrection, which this surah has established, is a quarter of the complete faith indicated by the Qur'an. Also, the matter of religion consists of four parts: the matter of the worshipped, the matter of the worshippers, the matter of worship, and the matter of recompense. This surah has taken care of the matter of recompense, and Surah Al-Kafirun is a quarter because it pertains to the matter of worship in a specific and hidden manner, even though it is in a manner of completeness and fulfillment. Surah Al-Nasr is a quarter because it pertains to the matter of worship in a general, clear, manifest, and elevated manner - and Allah is the Guide to the right path and to Him is the return.
