Commentary

And when the great turmoil reveals the hidden in the one who is troubled, he said: ﴿And the earth brought forth﴾, meaning it revealed and did not conceal, confirming the generality. He said: ﴿the earth﴾, meaning all of it, ﴿its burdens﴾, meaning what is buried in it, like the dead and the treasures whose matter was heavy upon the people. This is the plural of weight with a kasra. This is when the resurrection and standing are affected by that emergence from that earthquake, just as the emergence from the shaking of the carpet is affected by the shaking out of what is in its belly and folds, from dirt and dust and others. And what was upon its surface is a burden upon it because Allah gives it the strength to bring forth all of that, just as He gives it the strength to bring forth the small, tender plant that is softer than silk, which splits the hard earth that the tools and iron cannot penetrate. It splits the seed with all its hardness that resists iron, so it splits into two halves, and from it grows what He wants, glorified and exalted is He. It splits the shell of the walnut, the almond, and the peach pit, and others that are extremely hard, as we observe. And from it, the tree emerges by splitting the earth despite its weakness and softness and its hardness, and being upon its surface until it becomes the thickest and strongest of things. Likewise, the grain is the same. The One who is capable of that is, glorified and exalted is He, capable of creating the dead in the belly of the earth and restoring them to what they were upon, just as the fetus is in the womb and splits all its orifices for the purpose of hearing, sight, mouth, and others, without entering there with a plow or a saw, then it emerges from the belly. Thus, the emergence of the dead is without difference; all of it is easy for Him. Glorified is He, how great is His status and how exalted is His sovereignty.
