Commentary
And when He indicated by that the benefits in writing, which none but He, glorified and exalted is He, can encompass, because it is based upon the uprightness of the affairs of this world and the religion in this world and the Hereafter, and it is sufficient in indicating His subtle wisdom and delicate management, this added to its greatness in a way that encompasses others. He said: ﴿He taught﴾ meaning the necessary and theoretical knowledge ﴿man﴾ meaning the one whose nature is to be familiar with what he is in, not to transfer to others but to forget it if his Lord does not inspire him with it ﴿what he did not know﴾ meaning by His kindness and wisdom, so that his state in his religion from the Book and the Sunnah and his worldly affairs from transactions and crafts may be organized by it. Thus, he receives from His knowledge that is hidden, which has no apparent cause, what is known by the arrangement of the premises with boundaries and intermediates, so he knows the results, and what is known by intuitions. This is after the creation of the powers and the establishment of the proofs and the revelation of the verses. If that were only by causes, people would be equal in the duration of education and in the essence of the known, just as they are equal in the duration of pregnancy and the essence of humanity. And He, glorified and exalted is He, mentioned the beginning of man and his end by transferring him from the lowest states to the highest, affirming His Lordship and realizing his nobility. Al-Malawi said: And if there were anything among the gifts and blessings more honorable than knowledge, He would have mentioned it after the description of nobility - this has ended. In this is an indication of the greater generosity of scholars in teaching. And in the verse is an indication of the contemplation of the two realms of creation and command. Al-Razi said: And in each of the two realms are specifics and generalities - this has ended. The meaning is that He teaches you, O noble Prophet, even if you are unlettered and do not know anything now, just as He taught by the pen one who did not know. Thus, you would be - by what the description of nobility indicates regarding what you are in of unletteredness - more knowledgeable than the people of the pens and higher than any lofty rank.
