Commentary

And when He, glorified and exalted is He, completed what He wanted from the matter of creation, which is bringing into existence [by means], gradually, He began to alert to the realm of command, which is creation without means. He said, repeating the command to read, to emphasize its great importance and to reassure him ﷺ, calming his fear and informing that the one who brought him the command from before is not like their masters: ﴿Read﴾. And when he ﷺ had said at this matter, informing of the reality as the tongue of the state would say if it did not speak with the tongue of the saying: 'I am not a reader,' the implication was: 'So your Lord, who raised you and perfected your upbringing and educated you and perfected your education, commanded you to read, and He is capable of making you a reader.' He added to it [His saying]: ﴿And your Lord﴾, meaning the implication is: while the one who has favored you with abundant goodness is the ﴿Most Generous﴾, meaning the one who has the greatest perfection absolutely in terms of essence, attributes, and actions, so no deficiency can befall Him in anything at all, because His reality is far removed from blame that encompasses the faults of morals. He is the one who encompasses the virtues of morals, and no one else possesses that. He gives you what cannot be confined within limits. And He indicated that among that is that He bestows upon His unlettered nation knowledge and fortune that He has not bestowed upon any nation before them, despite their short lifespans. He said, indicating towards knowledge and teaching, implying His description, glorified and exalted is He, of bestowing knowledge to arrange the ruling of generosity upon this description that transfers a person from a lowly intellectual state to this high, complete state.
