Commentary
And when he mentioned what perhaps he could achieve in completing himself, he mentioned what perhaps could assist him in saving others. He said: "Or commanded" meaning that the one who forbids "with piety" meaning that which is the foundation of religion. It is the cultivation of the inner self with the light that arises from guidance, and the cultivation of the outer self as a result of that, which is derived from the cultivation of the inner self, which necessitates that. So he commanded this one who prays to adhere to the service of his master, who is unanimously acknowledged in his leadership. There is no doubt in his oneness in lordship by turning towards what pleases Him from the acts of worship. This is so that it may serve as a protection for the doer from His wrath, and he may be safe from destruction. The answer is omitted, its estimation being: Was it not better for him? So let him reflect on every matter of his, and not advance upon it until he knows with evidence that it is guidance and piety.
