Commentary

(p-145) And when he ruled with this rejection upon all of the type, indicating the abundance of those who possess it among them, and the righteous were very few, he made it the point of exception and said: ﴿Except for those who have believed﴾, meaning in Allah and His messengers. They were among the people of insight and knowledge. So we overwhelmed their minds with what their original nature called to and aided them in against their desires. We protected them from the worst of ages. Whenever we increased their age, we increased the lights of their minds and diminished the fire of their desires by weakening their natural dispositions and their attachment to this world. We established the lights of the truth and its illuminations among them, and we magnified the powers of their spirits. And when a person may claim faith falsely, he said: ﴿And they did righteous deeds﴾, meaning as a confirmation of their claim of faith, ﴿the righteous﴾, meaning from the good deeds of words and actions that are firmly established on the foundation of faith, perfected by what We granted them of knowledge to the utmost perfection, and accomplished to the utmost accomplishment. Indeed, We preserved them - and they are very few - by what We completed them with and honored them above all animals and others besides them. We did not allow desires or anything else to dominate them, and we established them upon what the methodology of reason required. They followed the messengers due to Our keeping them upon their original nature in the best form, which was not defiled by desire, lust, or inclination. Thus, their submission became easy, leading them to justice, fairness, and goodness, and all of the noble traits and high matters. They did not deviate from the methodology of the messengers in word or deed. The verse, as you see, from the interweaving: the first was omitted by what I understood from the verse, the deeds of the wicked, and secondly, the preservation of the original creation in the best form upon the original nature, so that its arrangement in the origin is ﴿Then We returned him to the lowest of the low﴾ [Al-Tin: 5] by the deeds of the wicked, for him there is a humiliating punishment ﴿Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds﴾, for We kept them upon the original nature in the best form. And when the context was to praise the believers, it was appropriate to enumerate their deeds that excel them as a reason just as He bestowed upon them with the reward. He said: ﴿So for them﴾, meaning it resulted from that that they have in both abodes what they were guided to of that which pleases Him, glorified and exalted is He ﴿a great reward﴾, meaning very great, and with that ﴿uninterrupted﴾, meaning not cut off or that He bestows upon them until in the state of illness and old age, for they strove for the pleasure of Allah, glorified and exalted is He, and they determined with a sincere determination that they would not be diminished from the deeds of righteousness by an atom's weight even if they lived for eternity. And that reward is a recompense for their deeds, a favor from Him in the origin and the branch, to the extent that if they became unable due to old age, He would write for them the reward of what they used to do in a state of health. And for whoever followed his desires in degradation, there is a great punishment because he was returned to the lowest of the low.
