Commentary
And when man, with these virtues, has been subjected by Allah, glorified and exalted is He, to desires and has been prepared by his nature for vices and lowly morals, and inclinations and opportunities that lead the souls astray, and most of creation is destroyed by them so that the power of Allah, glorified and exalted is He, may be made clear, He did not exempt but rather judged upon the entire species by them just as He judged upon it with rectitude. So He, exalted is He, said, indicating with the tool of delay that its deviation after that sound intellect and the clear enlightened mind is in the utmost distance were it not for the wondrous power and the overpowering force: "Then We returned him" meaning by what We have of complete power and comprehensive knowledge, so We rendered the benefits of what We created for him null, thus he wasted himself and missed the means of his happiness, and We turned him upside down in his creation. So he became, in both aspects of his character and creation, a soul and a desire, or more general than that by the turning upside down, "the lowest of the low" meaning to what is beneath the rank of the despised inanimate objects. Thus he began to commit evil deeds that necessitate after the goodness of gathering to the utmost of scattering. As for his return in his character, it is that We subjected to him the desires that We instilled in the souls, and made them a call to every misery. They prevailed over his intellect and blinded him until they led him to the watering places and caused him to fall into the abysses and calamities, to the extent that he often engages in many of his affairs while he is certain that they are false and abominable, which no sane person would approach. So he began to worship besides Allah what is beneath humanity, rather even the entirety of animals that have no harm in them nor benefit, and he began to engage in oppression, aggression, falsehood, slander, and countless types of immorality and disobedience, and he wronged the offspring of his kind and others. He exerted himself in debauchery and acted in ways that he does not doubt that no one with the slightest insight would approve of him, who is obliged by his matter and concerned with his affair. Thus he became by that lower in rank than the beasts, rather than the lowest of the despised insects, for although they have desires, they do not have an intellect to cover them and obscure their light with their darkness. So it cannot be attributed to them that they wasted anything due to their lack of accountability for the absence of the intellect that necessitates honor. As for him, he used what We created for him of tools and what We favored him with of perfections, in other than what We created for him, thus he deserved the humiliating punishment. Then he dies without recompense for anything of that or for much of it. Therefore, there must be in wisdom at that time a resurrection for him, and for him after the resurrection with his Lord there is a lasting punishment. As for his character, it is with old age until he became weak after those powers, and after that honor, he became humiliated and disgraceful, and after that abundant knowledge and enlightened thought, he knows nothing. He began to find him repulsive and deny him who was once familiar with him and used to seek his fragrance. Ibn Burjan said: As for his return in the path of religion, it is with disbelief and denial. And as for what is his recompense, it is with transformation in the realm of Barzakh and the alteration of his form to what his creation and actions in this world have dominated from among the creatures, insects, and beasts. In the Hereafter, his eyes will turn blue and his creation will be distorted. Imam Abu al-Abbas al-Iqlishi said in the explanation of "the later introduction" in his explanation of the Most Beautiful Names: Indeed, Allah, exalted is He, created him.
O mankind - first, he is in the best form. Then, he is created in this body which draws him to the lowest of the low. If he puts his intellect before his desires, he ascends to the highest of the high, and he is among the close ones who are favored. But if he puts his desires before his intellect, he descends to the perception of Hellfire, and he is among the distant ones who are delayed.
