Commentary
And when it is necessary that in most cases, the orphan lacks knowledge due to the negligence of the guardian, and from the lack of knowledge comes misguidance, he clarifies that his orphanhood and neglect of him in carrying on their religion was a great blessing for him because he was not upon the religion of his people at any time: ﴿And He found you﴾ meaning He encountered you ﴿lost﴾ meaning you did not know the laws ﴿You did not know what the Book was nor what faith was﴾ [Ash-Shura: 52]. So he attributed the necessary, which is misguidance, to the one that is necessary, and the cause to the effect, which is the lack of knowledge. Therefore, you would not proceed to act upon any actions because you do not know the ruling concerning it except what you know through sound reasoning and a correct and upright nature from monotheism and some of its consequences. This is piety as previously mentioned in Al-Fatiha. And its reality was not intended, but rather it was stripped of any attachment to something from the laws and similar matters by the absence of one who would carry him towards that to clarify it. That contemplation by itself leads him with his sound intellect to the correct belief in the fundamentals [and the standing in] the branches. ﴿So He guided﴾ meaning He guided you to a guidance encompassing all knowledge. Your knowledge through revelation, inspiration, and success in contemplation was what you did not know.
