Commentary
And when He mentioned the day with the most honorable of what is in it, in relation to the one who swears by it, the night followed it, bound to it by what understands his sincerity, for there is no name that specifically belongs to the most honorable of what is in it. So He said: ﴿And the night﴾, meaning that by which the perfection of righteousness is completed; and when its beginning and end is the end of the day and the beginning of the day, [light] mixed with the darkness of turning, the night is bound with the day, a constraint by pure darkness. So He said: ﴿When it covers﴾, meaning the inhabitants have settled or its darkness has calmed, and its clothing and its blackness have balanced, so it has become pure and covered everything with its darkness. The one who covers is the one who is covered, and with its covering, its wind has settled, so it was in the utmost beauty. It is possible that the [first] refers to what this Messenger ﷺ brings of the decisive, and the second refers to the ambiguous. And these four states (p-102) of light and darkness - which are light mixed with darkness, [and darkness] mixed with light, and pure brightness and pure darkness - occur in the horizons in a person similarly. His spirit is pure light, and his nature is dense darkness, and his heart is light mixed with the darkness of the soul, and the soul is darkness mixed with the light of the heart. If the desire of the soul overcomes the luminosity of the heart, all of it becomes darkened. And if the luminosity of the heart overcomes the darkness of the soul, it becomes luminous. And if the spirit prevails over the nature, it elevates him above the rank of the angels. And if the nature prevails over the spirit, it lowers him below the rank of the animals, as He, the Most High, said: ﴿They are nothing but like cattle; rather, they are more astray﴾ [Al-Furqan: 44].
