Commentary
And when this is a station above which there is no station, Allah, the Most High, said after His promise of salvation from the Fire: ﴿And surely He will be pleased﴾, meaning by granting the highest Paradise and more, with a promise that there is no breaking of it after the humiliation in the good life - as indicated by the tool of relief. And it is not strange that this promise is in this highest form because the verse was revealed concerning Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, when he purchased Bilal, may Allah be pleased with him, in a group of weak Muslims who were being harmed by the polytheists, so he freed them. Allah, the Most High, clarified that he is inclined towards purifying his soul, so he is the successful one, as mentioned in Surah Ash-Shams, and that he is sincere in giving to the weak from orphans and the poor and freeing the weak in every situation, as mentioned in Surah Al-Balad. Al-Baghawi, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated from Al-Zubair [meaning] Ibn Bakkar that he said: Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, used to buy the weak and free them. His father said to him: O my son! If you were to buy someone who would protect your back. He replied: I want to protect my back. And he said: He freed Bilal and Umm 'Umais and Zahra, and her sight was lost when he freed her. The Quraysh said: Nothing took her sight away except Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza. She said: They lied, by the House of Allah, Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza do not harm or benefit. So Allah restored her sight to her. And he freed the woman from Al-Nahdiyah and her daughter and the maid of Banu Al-Muammil. And he said: He purchased Bilal from Umayyah ibn Khalaf to rescue him from what he was in of torment when he was tying his hands and feet at the time of the heat and throwing him naked on the hot sand and beating him. And whenever he beat him, he would cry out: One, One, and he would increase his beating. So he purchased him with a slave that belonged to Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, and that slave was worth ten thousand dinars and had boys and maidservants and livestock and was a polytheist. So when he purchased him with that and freed him, the polytheists said: He did this for a hand that was with Bilal, meaning that Allah revealed that as a refutation of them. And among the most wonderful things is the follow-up with the morning light, which is in the Prophet ﷺ, and in it is ﴿And surely your Lord will give you, and you will be pleased﴾ [Ad-Duha: 5], indicating that he is the closest of his nation to his station ﷺ except for 'Isa ﷺ, for he is the most pious after the Prophets absolutely. And to [that] his caliphate is a right without doubt, for it is from what the Prophet ﷺ promised that he would be pleased with him and that he would not be pleased with anyone else, just as he was pleased with his caliphate for him in prayer and he was not pleased with anyone else when he prohibited that, rather he rebuked when he heard the recitation of another and said: "Allah and the believers refuse except for Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him." And the end of it returns to the beginning in that the striving of this companion, may Allah be pleased with him, is distinct and completes the distinction of the striving of that wretched one. And some of them said: The wretched one referred to is Abu Jahl. And also, this conclusion indicates that whoever purifies his soul and purifies it by manifesting the light of the meaning from illuminating the darkness of the night by what he manifests with the light of standing and other types of good will be pleased with the physical light after death - and Allah is the one who grants success to what is correct.
