Commentary
The purpose of Surah Al-Lail is to indicate the purpose of the sun. It is the complete action in the souls by affirming the perfection of ability through choice, differing among people in their striving while their intentions are united. It is the splendid arrival at refuge from the desires of the belly and the private parts, and what follows that from comfort. Its name, 'the night,' is the clearest indication of this when reflecting on the oath and the answer, and the occurrence of that which is correct. Also, the night itself indicates this because it is contrary to the desires of the soul due to the darkness and sleep, which is akin to death. This prevents most of the desires and necessitates most of the oppositions. 'In the name of Allah,' to Him belongs the apparent greatness and the brilliant wisdom, 'the Most Gracious,' whose grace encompasses the creation and the continuous manifestation, 'the Most Merciful,' who has specifically favored whom He wills with that which pleases Him, making him one who praises and thanks Him.
* *For what He has clarified in the sun regarding the state of one who purifies his soul and the state of one who corrupts it, and He has made clear at the end of it the opposition of Thamud to their messenger, which destroyed them. Thus, it is known that people differ in their striving to attain the abundance of good and the abundance of evil. Among them are those who are overcome by the darkness of ignorance, and among them are those who are overcome by the daylight of guidance. They differ in their intentions, and in their sources and means, after He has affirmed that He is the one who acts in the souls with wickedness and piety. He swore at the beginning of this by that which indicates the wonders of His creation in its harm and benefit, as a reminder of the completeness of His ability that He is the doer by choice. He intervenes between a person and his heart until He leads him to his desire, contrary to what leads him to it, but rather to what leads to its opposite. And it is hardly believable that there is unity in intention and difference in striving and reaching. He explained the reward of each as a warning from the abundance of evil and an encouragement towards the abundance of good, and between that which is for purification and that which is for corruption. He said: 'And the night,' meaning that which is a sign of darkness, which is the cause of confusion and mixing regarding what it speaks of in terms of ambiguity and confusion in states and the invocation that leads to the darkness of non-existence. It is the place of secrets by which the righteous are reached and the wicked are cut off: 'When it covers,' meaning it covers what was of existence, becoming visible by the light of the day gradually, little by little, and what it indicates of the magnificent creator and the great annihilator and the emergence of it.
