Commentary
And when it is known that whoever hears this speech knows that piety can only be commanded, and wickedness can only be prohibited, it is expected what will be said regarding both of them, from what can be affected by them. Allah, the Most High, said: "Certainly, he has succeeded" meaning he has attained all that he desires. "Who purifies it" meaning he develops it, rectifies it, and cleanses it with a great cleansing by what Allah makes secret for him of beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds. He purifies it from what he keeps secret to avoid the blameworthy traits, for indeed, each one is facilitated for what he was created for. The religion is built upon adornment and purification, and "purifies" is valid for both meanings.
