Commentary
And when the reference to the souls was completed for the people of insight, He made a clear statement for those below them, saying: ﴿And by the soul﴾, meaning which soul? In it, glorified is He, encompasses the entire world. And since the souls are the most astonishing of what exists in the universe and the most comprehensive, He expressed in them by the act of making them equal, urging contemplation of their matter for the purpose of reasoning about their Creator, to strive in rectifying their affairs. He said: ﴿And He fashioned it﴾, meaning He made it according to this most just law in its members and what is in it of substances, attributes, meanings, and the wonders of the mixture of conflicting elements, which He harmonized through making equal and adjusting, making them blended. The context and the preceding and following indicate that the answer to the oath is estimated as follows: Truly, He, glorified and exalted is He, has fashioned your souls upon differing natures, preparing them for what He wants from the hearts in terms of purification and corruption, by what He has granted you of ability and choice. He has advanced in guiding you towards the purification of your souls and the cleansing of your hearts, for the belief in resurrection, with what is clearer than the sun, with no doubt in it nor confusion, so that you may be saved from the torment of this world and the Hereafter by possessing piety and detaching from wickedness and tyranny.
And the scholar Abu Ja'far ibn al-Zubayr said: As was previously mentioned in Surah Al-Balad, His definition, glorified is He, of what He created in man from toil, along with what He has granted him, glorified is He, of the tools of perception, and He has laid out for him the evidence and lessons, and He has manifested in the form of one who possesses control over him, distinguishing his guidance from his obstinacy: ﴿And We guided him to the two paths﴾ [Al-Balad: 10] ﴿Indeed, We have guided him to the way﴾ [Al-Insan: 3]. And that is by what has been granted to him of the acquired ability, the reality of which is concern, or for what? And how can there be oppression and independence? Then ﴿And Allah created you and what you do﴾ [As-Saffat: 96]. He, glorified and exalted is He, swore in this surah by the success of whoever chooses his guidance and exerts his effort and spends his energy: ﴿Certainly, he has succeeded who purifies it﴾ [Ash-Shams: 9] and the failure of whoever is absent from his guidance and follows his desires: ﴿And certainly, he has failed who corrupts it﴾ [Ash-Shams: 10]. Thus, He clarified the state of the two groups and the paths they take.
