Commentary

And when he mentioned the source of light, he mentioned the place of darkness and said: "And the night" meaning that which is opposite to the day. It is the place of stillness, contraction, and concealment. (p-72) "When it covers it" meaning it covers the sun, and its light goes away when it sets. The shadows of the earth extend over its surface that is in contact with us. The eastern horizon begins to darken, and that darkness extends according to the length and shortness of the night, just as the light of reason covers the body by virtue of its nature with its evil and the baseness of its element. All of this is by known measures and established scales of justice, in which there is no imbalance, nor does it undergo dissolution, until the Lord of Glory wills. He did not express it in the past as he did with the day because the light does not leave the night all at once, but rather little by little. Nor does it cease from light, unlike the day, for when it reveals the sun and there is no cloud or murk, it reveals the sun at once, and there remains no darkness with it at all.
