Commentary

And when He, glorified and exalted is He, denied these deficiencies, He established it upon what necessitated His physical desire, which branches into types that require its doer to be the one who bestows it upon him from some of His bounty. He is fully aware of all of its matters and capable of benefiting and harming by Himself and by whom He wills from His soldiers. He said, indicating what results from the sight of the seeing eye roaming in the physical world and the sight of the insight roaming in the spiritual world, from his desire to obtain all that he sees with his seeing eye and knows with his insight from what is beautiful, and to be freed from all that he sees from what is ugly. He reminded him of what he should express gratitude for by using these senses in what He has legislated for him and to restrain it from what Allah has prohibited him from: "Did We not make for him two eyes?" This means, by virtue of Our greatness which no one can match or approach, "with which he sees; otherwise, most of what he desires would be hindered from him. We split them while he was in the womb in three layers of darkness, in a proportion that does not allow one to exceed the other. We determined the whiteness and blackness or blueness or other than that according to what you see, and We endowed them with sight in a manner that creation is incapable of comprehending.
