Commentary

And when a person does not boast about spending except when it leads to poverty, he knows that the intended indication is that he has more than what he has spent, in that he belittles it with the word destruction. This indicates the second and third of his carnal desires, which are his desire to have pride and gratitude over all existing things, and his desire to possess wealth that thoughts cannot encompass nor lands contain - as indicated by the hadith: 'If the son of Adam had a valley of gold, he would not fill his belly except with dust.' Glorified and exalted is He, He explained his ignorance in his reckoning. That is what follows with His saying: 'He says,' meaning boasting about his ability and strength: 'I have destroyed wealth abundantly.' And for the purpose of exaggeration in its abundance, the reading of [Abu] Ja'far came with emphasis that it is a plural that must be like the bowing ones and the prostrating ones, which implies that it is beyond counting. Rather, if he gathered it, the earth would not contain it except by having some on top of others, so it cannot be counted or limited. That is, this is little compared to the much that I have. I have adorned the necks of men with it, and I have enslaved the free with it in every time. So I have become in a position that when I call, many respond, and when I summon, many answer, and when I command, the obeying become great, in fulfillment of my past favors and a desire for my remaining blessings. So who can resist me and who opposes my command, let alone wanting to obscure my mention or diminish my status.
