Commentary
Certainly, We have created. This means by what We have of complete power and greatness that cannot be matched. The human being, this type, is in hardship. This means in severe intensity and great difficulty surrounding him, encompassing him like the container encompasses its contents. If He, glorified and exalted is He, had entrusted him with any of it to himself, he would have perished. Were it not for these calamities, he would have claimed what is not befitting of him from great merits. Some of them have claimed divinity, and some have claimed unity with the Lord of creation - exalted is Allah above their clearly corrupt words. By what He, glorified and exalted is He, has associated with it, such as death, illness, and other hardships. He, glorified is He, has done this to manifest what the servant has of weakness and incapacity, along with what He has granted him of apparent and hidden strengths in speech, action, force, and intellect. What He has, glorified is He, of complete knowledge and comprehensive power, is to show the one whose character is upon this attribute. He knows all that is in the surah, and he certainly knows the denial of his assumption due to the limits of his power and the exaltation of His greatness. The corruption of this assumption is evident from the perspective of reason, as he is a created being, and from the perspective of existence, as he follows the path of evil and cannot follow the path of good except by divine guidance. He certainly knows the miraculous nature of the surah, for no creature has the ability to produce a single sentence that encompasses all that is beyond it from sentences. This, in addition to what it has of the arts of brevity that have reached the level of miraculousness, along with what the remaining sentences have of miraculousness in the beauty of arrangement, the precision of composition, the connection, and the consideration of words for meanings, and other things that cannot be comprehended by anyone but Him, glorified is He, and exalted is His status. He knows that honor and humiliation are not two realms upon the enjoyment in this world and the constriction, as has been previously explained in the surah of Al-Fajr. For what He knows of the human being remaining in hardship, intensity, and toil due to his constant need first for absolute movement and stillness, second for food and drink, and third for what results from them, and other things that exhaust counting and limit understanding. The denial is directed in His saying, exalted is He, as a clarification of the causes that lead him to hardship, which are two desires: one psychological and one sensory. The psychological desire is confined to four: the first is that he wishes for all that exists to be in his grasp, and he pointed to it.
