Commentary

And when the city was magnified by swearing an oath by it, its greatness was increased by the state of it, indicating that the honor of the place is by the honor of its inhabitants. This is in a general state, so He said: ﴿And you﴾ meaning, and you are the best of all present and absent. ﴿A sanctuary﴾ meaning, a resident or lawful for you what is not lawful for others from killing whom you want among those who claim that no one has power over him ﴿in this city﴾. So it is lawful to kill Ibn Khatal and others, even if he is related to the curtains of the Kaaba. And it is forbidden to kill one who enters the house of Abu Sufyan and other than that of what Allah has done for you after the migration, after the revelation of this Meccan surah for a long time, as a sign of prophethood. Or it means: its people are made lawful for you, and you are the noblest of creation, what they do not make lawful for themselves from hunting or trees. And He repeated its manifestation and did not conceal it, increasing its glorification, denouncing what they make lawful of harming the believers in it, and indicating that He delights in mentioning it. For the oath has occurred by the master of the city and the master of the servants. And for every kind, there is a master, and it is the end of it in honor. The noblest of inanimate things is the ruby, and it is its master. If it were to rise above this honor, it would become a plant that grows as in Paradise. And the noblest of plant kinds is the date palm; if it were to rise, it would become an animal that moves by will. The animal is the master of the worlds, and its master is man, due to what he has of speech and expression. And the master of mankind is the messengers, blessings and peace be upon them, due to what they have of a great connection with the Sovereign, the Just. And their master is the noblest of creation, Muhammad, son of Abdullah, the Messenger of Allah, the noblest of the empowered and their master, for he has reached the highest rank that can be for it. If there were to remain a rank above that which is possible for the empowered, it would have been transferred to him. And because he is the noblest, his endurance was the highest of endurance. He endures the harm of his people with words that are sharper than arrows. And he placed the entrails of a camel on his noble back - may we be ransomed by our noble faces and protected foreheads and cheeks - while he is prostrating. And placing thorns in his path, and the consensus on targeting him with all kinds of harm from imprisonment, exile, and killing, as he said: "No one has been harmed in Allah as I have been harmed."
