Commentary
And when the context guided to the equivalence of "So he did not penetrate the steep path" [Al-Balad: 11], it indicates that the meaning is: and I do not refrain from the harmful actions that are the deeds necessitating blame, despite being burdensome. Rather, he cut off the one who deserves connection and connected the one who deserves to be cut off. Then he was among those who disbelieved and advised one another to remain in ignorance, and they accumulated sins and followed desires and acted with harshness. He then referred to his saying: "And those who disbelieved" meaning they concealed what is apparent to them from the knowledge of their insightful hearts. And when disbelief in the signs is among the worst types of disbelief, because it is disbelief in what Allah has made knowledge of the unseen of His covenant, which is all that the senses can perceive of the sayings and actions indicative of the Majestic One, as they indicate the attributes that point to the one described by them, who has manifested through His actions and concealed by His great majesty. He said: "By Our signs" [meaning] what they have of greatness in relation to us and the manifestation that cannot be hidden. "They" meaning especially due to the evil of their intentions and the corruption of their natures. "The companions of the left" meaning the trait that brings about misfortune, deprivation, and destruction. These are misfortunate upon themselves, and their disbelief indicates the corruption of their natures. Thus, it indicates that whoever's disbelief is lighter is not of a corrupt nature, and he is close to being guided and will be among the companions of the right.
