Commentary
They were pleased to be, as if it were a nature for them, with the laggards, meaning: the women. And it was decreed, meaning: the decree that prevents, upon their hearts, meaning: until they were pleased for themselves with being left behind from the cause of happiness, while being counted among the laggards, with what is a disgrace in this world and a fire in the Hereafter.
And when the doer of the decree was left ambiguous, he denied precise knowledge and said: So they, meaning: because of this decree, do not understand, meaning: they have no understanding by which they know what is in jihad of honor and happiness in both abodes, and what is in being left behind of misery and disgrace. Therefore, they do not strive in jihad. There is nothing more harmful than these wealth and children that have distanced them from praise and bound them to blame and defects. Indeed, the verse about wealth has surrounded the beginning and the end of the story, which indicates its content.
