Commentary
And when glorified and exalted is He completed the speech regarding seeking forgiveness and its justification until He concluded with the humiliation of those who lag behind, and since killing caused by jihad is a reason for leaving the prayer for the martyr as an honor for him, death that occurs in the sitting position, which is accepted regarding jihad, is made a reason for leaving the prayer as a humiliation for that sitter. So He said, referring to what the phrase indicates: ﴿Seek forgiveness for them or do not seek forgiveness for them﴾ [At-Tawbah: 80] the verse. In a manner like: So do not seek forgiveness for them at all: ﴿And do not pray﴾ meaning: the prayer that was legislated to honor the one prayed upon and to intercede for him ﴿for any one of them﴾. Then He described the one with His saying: ﴿Died﴾ and His saying: ﴿Never﴾ is related to the prohibition, not to the death. ﴿And do not stand at his grave﴾ meaning: because your standing is a mercy and they are not deserving of it. Then He justified that with His saying: ﴿Indeed, they disbelieved in Allah﴾ meaning: the One who has all greatness. And when death upon disbelief prevents the prayer for the deceased in all its meanings, there was no need for emphasis by repeating the preposition, so it was said: ﴿and His Messenger﴾ meaning: the one who is the greatest of people in favor upon them due to what he has of their advice through the message. The meaning is that due to the enormity of what they committed from that, Allah did not guide them, so they continued in misguidance until they died in a state of the prohibition on seeking forgiveness for them, referred to by His saying: ﴿And Allah does not guide the disobedient people﴾ [At-Tawbah: 80]. And that is the intended meaning of His saying: expressing in the past while the meaning is in the present tense, confirming the news that it is indeed occurring without a doubt: ﴿And they died while﴾ meaning: while they were in their hearts and outwardly ﴿disobedient﴾ meaning: deeply immersed in disobedience.
