And when the one who is pleased with something and the one who hates its opposite, the one who forbids it, does not act contrary to it except out of pretense, and he has no inclination towards it. This religion is based on honor and wealth. He followed that with His saying, causing them to rejoice in their staying back: "So if Allah returns you" meaning: the King who has all greatness, for Him is absolute wealth independent of your journey to a group of them. Meaning: they are those whom Allah extends their lifespans until you return to them. This indicates that He, glorified and exalted is He, has destroyed some of them in their absence. So you intended to go out on another journey. "So they sought your permission" meaning: they requested that you allow them "to go out" meaning: with you on that journey. "So say" as a punishment for them and wealth independent of them and honor over them, forbidding them in the form of news so that your truthfulness in it may be a sign of prophethood and a proof of the message: "You will never go out with me, ever" meaning: on any journey; because Allah has made me independent of you and made you in need of me. "And you will never fight with me against an enemy" because you have made yourselves among the ranks of those who stay behind and you are not fit for fighting. The restriction with 'with me' as it indicates their heaviness excludes what was after him, blessings and peace be upon him, with his companions, may Allah be pleased with them, from their journey and their fighting.

And when He disgraced them, glorified is He, by what they disgraced themselves with, He explained it by saying: "Indeed, you were pleased with staying back" meaning: from the honor of accompanying me. And when the earlier ones are more indicative of the dominance of instincts over faith and disbelief and others, He said: "The first time" meaning: in the battle of Tabuk. And whoever misses it is enough for him that we miss it. Abu Hayyan said: He explained it by the cause, which is the pleasure arising from the reason, which is hypocrisy. It has ended.

And when He concluded the judgment and the reason, He caused His saying: "So sit with those who stay behind" meaning: those who were pleased for themselves with this description, which among its meanings is corrupt; for they are not fit for jihad and will never be found in the places of glory. And some of them said: The intended meaning is those who stayed back without excuse in the battle of Tabuk, or the women and children, or the lowly people, or the opposers, or the sick and the disabled, or the people of corruption. The preferred interpretation is to take it as a generality, meaning: that the intention is to rebuke them and admonish them.
