Commentary
And it is also good that its consequence is that in the first there is the ingratitude of wealth without a covenant, and in this one there is ingratitude with the covenant. So it is an advancement from the lower to the higher. And it indicates the great status of the covenant by the greatness of the recompense for its betrayal by His saying: ﴿So He made them inherit﴾, meaning Allah, or the continuation of miserliness as a recompense for that ﴿hypocrisy﴾ firmly established ﴿in their hearts﴾, meaning: that they will continue to say what they do not do ﴿until the Day they meet Him﴾, meaning: at death when the opportunity has passed ﴿for what they broke with Allah﴾, meaning: He is the greatest king ﴿what they promised Him﴾, because the recompense is of the same kind as the action; and since breaking a promise is extremely reprehensible, and its perpetrator does not shy away from absolute lying, He said: ﴿and for what they used to lie﴾, meaning: they continually renew the lie along with the promise and are detached from it. Thus, they have completed hypocrisy; they made a covenant and betrayed, they promised and broke, they spoke and lied.
