Commentary
So when He gave them, and He repeated His saying: "from His bounty," confirming what the covenant had said, emphasizing the notification that He has no right over anyone, nor any act in what He bestows upon them, nor any ability in it. "They were stingy with it," meaning: they lied concerning what they had covenanted and confirmed with utmost confirmation. They did not give charity, rather they withheld the obligatory right that should be shown, let alone the charity of secrecy. "And they turned away," meaning: they imposed upon themselves the avoidance of obedience to the One who favored them, despite their knowledge of the ugliness of breaking the covenant. And since turning away may be understood as only physical, He said: "and they are turning away," meaning: with their hearts. The turning away is a description that is inherent to them, which has not been renewed for them, but rather it was an instinct within them, and we know this from the time they made the covenant. Abu Hayyan said: Al-Dahhak said: They are Nabtal ibn al-Harith, Jad ibn Qays, Mu'attib ibn Qushayr, and Thalabah ibn Hatib, and upon them the verse was revealed. End.
