Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, clarified actions and sayings for groups of the hypocrites - among them were those who were with him, blessings and peace be upon him, in the army - which are in the utmost corruption, that perhaps necessitated that he ask about the laggards, if they had gone out, what would their condition be? So he said in response to that and as an indication that the crime of those whom he did not pardon is a necessary trait: ﴿The hypocrites and the hypocritical women﴾ meaning: those who outwardly displayed faith and inwardly concealed disbelief ﴿some of them﴾. And when their reference is the stagnation on desires, nature, habit, and imitation from the follower to the one followed, he said: ﴿from some﴾ meaning: in the attribute of hypocrisy, they are in it like a single body. Their affairs are similar in their sayings and actions and all their conditions, and the point is that their state opposes the state of the people of faith. Therefore, he clarified it by saying: ﴿They enjoin what is wrong﴾ meaning: from what has preceded of foolishness and confusion in morals and other than that from bad traits ﴿and they forbid what is right﴾ meaning: from all that involves the glorification of Islam and its people. They seek by that fitnah ﴿and they withhold their hands﴾ meaning: they are stingy and do not spend except while they are averse to it.
And when it was as if it was said: Do they not fear by that the hastening of punishment? He answered by saying: ﴿They forgot Allah﴾ meaning: the Most High King, to whom belongs all command and there is no command for anyone with Him. And it is appropriate that this be a reason for what preceded it; and for what they advanced upon, it caused his saying: ﴿So He forgot them﴾ meaning: He acted towards them as one who forgets, for they belittled Him by leaving them from His mercy. So that abandonment was a reason for the arrival of His wrath; and for what they have become accustomed to of all these deficiencies, they specialized in the completeness of wickedness. So he explained that in a style of amazement at their condition, and he said, manifesting the place of the implicit, generalizing and linking the ruling to the description: ﴿Indeed, the hypocrites are﴾ meaning: specifically ﴿the wicked﴾ meaning: those who are outside the circle of what benefits them from obedience, firmly established in that. For he knew that if they had fought, they would have acted like these, for all are of one clay.
