Commentary

And when he explained the action of the mockers, he followed it by explaining the matter of another category that is less hypocritical than them, by what they have that is close to belief. He said: ﴿The hypocrites are cautious﴾. He expressed this with a description that indicates firmness, warning them of the slightest hypocrisy, for it leads to the greatest hypocrisy. ﴿That it may be revealed﴾. And when the surah that exposes them was a calamity and a severe trial from the trials of time, he used the verb with 'upon' and said: ﴿Upon them is a surah﴾, meaning: a piece of the Qur'an that is strongly organized. ﴿That informs them﴾, meaning: it informs them with a great and thorough notification ﴿Of what is in their hearts﴾, which they did not reveal to anyone other than themselves or anyone at all. Perhaps this category used to swear oaths hoping that it would cast doubt on some of the people or lighten the burden on them when what would expose them was revealed. It has been narrated that they used to say what leads to and indicates hypocrisy, and they would say: 'Perhaps Allah will not expose our secret.' Some of them said after some words they had spoken: 'By Allah, I see us as the worst of Allah's creation, and I wish that I had been brought forward and received a hundred lashes, and that nothing would be revealed about us that would expose us.'

And when their caution along with their actions contradicts the words of hypocrisy, the action of the mocker, he said, threatening: ﴿Say: Mock﴾, meaning: do the action of the mocker with the utmost desire. ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾, meaning: the One who encompasses complete knowledge and perfect power, ﴿Will bring forth﴾, meaning: He has the description of bringing forth ﴿What you are cautious of﴾, meaning: His bringing forth of your evils. And according to Al-Hasan, the Muslims used to call this surah 'the excavator', for it excavated what was in the hearts of the hypocrites and revealed it.
