Commentary
And when it was clarified that their oath is only due to their dislike of disgrace among the believers, and it was made clear who is more deserving of their satisfaction, the evidence for that was established in a questioning of denial and reproach, indicating that they fled from a temporary disgrace and fell into a permanent disgrace. Disgrace is a sense of shame in humiliation. He said: ﴿Do they not know﴾ meaning: for their guidance to the one more deserving of satisfaction. And when the mention of the matter was ambiguous and then explained, it became more significant. It was implied for the matter, and he said: ﴿That indeed﴾ meaning: the great matter ﴿who opposes Allah﴾ and He is the greatest King, and he shows opposition - as indicated by the mention - ﴿and His Messenger﴾ meaning: the one whose greatness is from His greatness, by acting towards them like one who disputes over the boundary of land and wants to prevail over the boundary of his opponent, forcing him to be in a boundary other than his own. ﴿So indeed, for him is the fire of Hell﴾ meaning: so the existence of it for him as a recompense for that is a truth without doubt ﴿abiding therein﴾ meaning: forever without end, just as his intention was to oppose eternally; then he alerted to the greatness of this recompense by saying: ﴿That﴾ meaning: the matter of great description and significant importance ﴿is the great disgrace﴾.
