Commentary
Then he explained that by their disdain for Allah and His Messenger. He informed that they fear for their blood, so they outwardly rectify themselves to protect it with false oaths. He said: ﴿They swear by Allah﴾ meaning: the One who possesses complete greatness ﴿for you﴾ meaning: that they have not harmed the Prophet ﷺ specifically, nor your children in general; and he clarified the ultimate intent of them by saying: ﴿to please you﴾.
And when the Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, was not an ear in the sense they intended, he clarified that he was not pleased with their faith due to the absence of its truth in their hearts. However, he showed their affirmation of what had preceded from the rectification. He said: ﴿And Allah﴾ meaning: the One to whom belongs all command and no command belongs to anyone with Him ﴿and His Messenger﴾ meaning: the one who is the highest of His creation, and has reached the utmost in His glorification by unifying the pronoun indicating the oneness of the one who is pleased, for whatever pleases one of them pleases the other. He said: ﴿It is more rightful that﴾ meaning: that ﴿they please Him﴾. And since the basis of pleasing is obedience, and the essence of obedience is faith, he expressed this with the description because it is a part of it: ﴿If they are believers﴾ meaning: they know that He is more deserving of being pleased, so they strive in that. And this indicates that if they renew their pleasing Him at all times, it would be a sign of their faith, and if they oppose Him, it would be conclusive evidence of their disbelief.
