Commentary
And when the Most High informed about their bad, lowly state which does not benefit them in this world and destroys them in the Hereafter, He alerted them to what is better for them than the noble, exalted state. He said: ﴿And if only they﴾ meaning the hypocrites ﴿were satisfied with what Allah had given them﴾ meaning the Bestower of all blessings; for He has all perfection ﴿and His Messenger﴾ whose greatness is from His greatness, whether that which is given is little or much, whether its duration is long or short ﴿and they said﴾ meaning: with satisfaction ﴿Allah is sufficient for us﴾ meaning: He is enough for us because He has all greatness, for He is the absolute Rich. (p-504) And when sufficiency sometimes comes from immediate fulfillment and sometimes from reliance on a future promise, He clarified that the latter is intended because it is more indicative of faith. He said: ﴿Allah will certainly give us﴾ meaning: the Greatest King with a promise that will not be broken, and they believed that no one has a right to anything. They said: ﴿from His bounty and His Messenger﴾ meaning: the one whose command is not opposed, according to what He has decreed for us from eternity; then they justified this by saying: ﴿Indeed, we are longing for Allah﴾ meaning: the One who possesses all attributes of perfection alone ﴿longing﴾ meaning: deeply desiring, so for this reason we suffice with what comes from Him, whatever it may be, meaning: that would be better for them because they will only receive what He has decreed for them, whether they like it or not.
