And when it became clear that their good and bad are better for them in that the contentment with the bitterness of decree necessitates the judge's inclination towards the judged with compassion and mercy, he stated this in his saying: ﴿Say, are you waiting﴾ meaning: you are waiting with great anticipation ﴿for us except one of the two good things﴾ meaning: either we strike our enemies and gain victory and spoils and be rewarded, or they strike us with killing or otherwise and we be rewarded. Both matters are good: as for the good that you agree with us on its goodness, its matter is clear. As for the bad, it necessitates Allah's pleasure with us and His reward for us by being patient with it and our acceptance of it in reverence for Him and submission to His command, so it is good as we know, not bad as you imagine. ﴿And we are waiting for you﴾ meaning: we are anticipating one of the two evils, which is ﴿that Allah should strike you﴾ meaning: He who has all power, and we are among His party ﴿with a punishment from Him﴾ meaning: there is no cause for us in it, as He destroyed the earlier generations as a warning for the people ﴿or by our hands﴾ meaning: because of us through killing or plundering and capturing and striking and other than that; for your caution does not prevent you from Allah, and all of that is disliked by you.
And when it became evident from this statement that evil is specifically for the party of Satan, it was appropriate that they be commanded mockingly with what led them to that, diminishing their status. So he said: ﴿So wait﴾ meaning: you ﴿Indeed, we﴾ meaning: we ﴿are waiting with you﴾ meaning: for you, we will do as you do, and the intention is different. The verse is from the implication: it first omitted the striking to indicate it by what was established secondly, and secondly, one of the two evils to indicate it by establishing the two good things first.
