Commentary
And when the matter of the declaration was established, affirming and negating, he commanded what should be done after he set for them a term. He said: "So when" meaning: it causes that when "the sacred months" meaning: those in which I prohibited fighting them and I set a term for their pilgrimage, and the definition in it is like it: "As We sent to Pharaoh a messenger" [Al-Muzzammil: 15] "But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger" [Al-Muzzammil: 16] "Then kill the polytheists" meaning: the renegades for whom you set this term as a kindness and generosity; Al-Baghawi said: Al-Hasan ibn al-Fadl said: This verse abrogates every verse in the Qur'an that mentions avoidance and patience against the harm of enemies. It has ended.
And the meaning of: "Wherever you find them" meaning: in a sacred or non-sacred place, in a sacred month or otherwise, "and take them" meaning: by capturing them, "and besiege them" meaning: by preventing them from coming to the mosque and moving in the lands of Islam and every destination, "and sit in wait for them" meaning: specifically for them; for that is among the best acts of worship. "Every place of ambush" meaning: ambush them and take them by every path you can, even if it is by surprise or ambush without a call, and standing on the circumstance; for the meaning of sit in wait for them is: ambush them. And whenever the worker in the specific circumstance works from its wording or from its meaning, it is permissible for him to reach it without the intermediary of "in". Just as the verb can extend to the source without its wording if it is by its meaning, so too can it extend to the circumstance - this was mentioned by Abu Hayyan. And the expression of sitting is for directing to caution, and in the ambush and stability and ability to reach the act to the circumstance is an indication that they should occupy themselves in ambush with every part of every ambush if they are able to do so, unlike if it were expressed with "in"; for it would only indicate occupying every true ambush by being in one place of it, whichever place it was.
And when Allah commanded to tighten the noose on them, He clarified what necessitates refraining from them. He said: "But if they repent" meaning: from disbelief, "and establish" meaning: and affirm their claim of repentance with the just evidence by establishing "prayer and giving zakat" meaning: thus they connect what is between them and the Creator and what is between them and the creatures, submissively to Allah, glorified and exalted is He, and leaving corruption and engaging in righteousness in the manner that the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, commanded. So if these two just witnesses are found, "then let them go" meaning: because of that, "their way" meaning: by not exposing them to anything from what has preceded, for Allah accepts that from them and forgives them what has passed. "Indeed" meaning: because "Allah" meaning: the One who has glory and honor, "is Forgiving and Merciful" meaning: He is capable of erasing the sins from which its owner has repented and following him with honor.
