Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, informed of that, and urged acceptance of their news by what He described (p-493) of His Most Sacred Self from encompassing knowledge, He began to establish proof for what He said by reminding them of things they had previously witnessed from Him. He said, explaining what He informed of: "Indeed, they sought" meaning: they requested a great request, all of them, "the fitnah" meaning: to scatter you, "before" meaning: before this battle on the day of Uhud by breaking the hearts of the army by retreating from it until some of them nearly failed. And in Al-Muraysi' with what Ibn Ubayy said: "Surely, the mighty will surely drive out the weak from it" [Al-Munafiqun: 8]. And in the battle of Al-Khandaq with what occurred from them of denial in taking the treasures of Kisra and Qaysar, and the rumors against you regarding the betrayal of Banu Qurayzah, and other than that, as they did before in the battle of Banu Qaynuqa and Al-Nadir in their intention to strengthen each of them against you. And in other days of Allah in which their intentions were reversed and their plans were turned upside down, "and they turned" meaning: turning a lot, "the affairs for you" meaning: which you have harm in, openly and secretly, by altering opinions and planning plots and tricks, hoping they would find an opportunity to undermine your command, seizing it, or a gap in a situation they could widen. And their condition extended in this situation "until the truth came" meaning: the established truth in which there is no dispute in its occurrence, as He, glorified and exalted is He, had previously promised regarding the manifestation of the religion and the suppression of the corrupt. "And the command of Allah appeared" meaning: characterized by all attributes of perfection, majesty, and beauty, until there was no hope for them in concealing it, "and they were averse" meaning: to all of that. So there remained for them no hope in an attempt at confrontation or evasion, and their concern now became withdrawal and exaggeration in concealing the conditions and hiding the actions and sayings.
