And when he informed them of the declaration and of the time in which it is permitted, the meaning of the declaration from them is that there is no covenant for them. He excluded some of the allies and said: "Except for those with whom you have made a covenant," meaning: you have established a covenant between yourselves and them. "From the polytheists, then," meaning: after a long period, they were characterized by the fact that "they did not diminish anything from you," meaning: from the signs indicating their fidelity in themselves, as the Banu Dail from Banu Bakr violated in their fighting against Khuzā'ah, the allies of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him. "And they did not support," meaning: they did not assist in a way that would expose "anyone against you," meaning: from your enemies, as the Quraysh supported their allies from Banu Dail against your allies from Khuzā'ah. "So complete," and he indicated their distance from good by the preposition of purpose, saying: "to them their covenant until its term," meaning: even if it is prolonged. Al-Baghawi said: They are the Banu Damrah, a tribe from Kinānah, and there remained from their covenant nine months. The reason for this is that they did not violate. Al-Nahhas said: It is said that this is specific to the Banu Damrah in particular. Abu Muhammad al-Basṭi said: Qutaybah narrated to us, he said: Al-Hajjaj narrated from Ibn Jurayj from Mujahid, he said: There was a covenant between Banu Mudlij and Khuzā'ah, and they are the ones to whom Allah said: "So complete to them their covenant until its term."

And when their observance of their covenant was among the individuals of piety, and the matter of doing good to a person is among the actions of the loving, Allah, the Most High, said, explaining: "Indeed, Allah," meaning: the One who has the attributes of perfection, "loves the pious," meaning: He acts with them and with you in the actions of the loving. This is an encouraging statement for all to piety, and each one interprets it according to what he understands, thus it is from the magnificent miracle.
