Commentary
And when the context clearly indicates that this punishment will befall them, He established this with His saying: "On the Day when it will be heated"; that is, the heating will occur, which is intense kindling, "upon it"; that is, the wealth they have accumulated, "in the Fire of Hell"; meaning, which your fire does not approach. It will be thrown into it with frowning and scowling, just as the poor and others from the people of Allah are treated, especially when they are denied what they are due from spending. "So their foreheads will be branded with it"; that is, with this wealth, "which are their noblest parts"; because they are the gathering of faces and heads, and the place of honor that gathers wealth for the sake of scowling at the faces of the poor. "And their sides"; which they fill with desirable foods and delightful drinks, and to turn away from the poor with it. "And their backs"; which they fill to strengthen them and load them with clothes, and to show them off when they gather with the poor in one place. Then it will be said to them: "This is what you have hoarded"; and He referred to the one who carries it in a way that contradicts reason with His saying: "for yourselves"; that is, to compete with it and enjoy it, yet you did not spend it in what Allah commanded. "So taste what"; that is, the consequence and punishment of what "you used to hoard"; that is, you renewed the gathering of it continuously, being greedy for it. He indicated by the act of being that they are naturally inclined to this. Al-Bukhari narrated in the tafsir from Zaid ibn Wahb who said: I passed by Abu Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him, in Al-Rabadha. I said: What brought you to this land? He said: We were in Ash-Sham and I recited: "And those who hoard gold and silver" [At-Tawbah: 34] - the verse. Muawiyah said: This is not about us; this is only for the people of the Book! I said: Indeed, it is for us and for them. It was narrated from Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with both of them, that he said: This was before the obligation of zakat was revealed. When it was revealed, Allah made it a purification for wealth; meaning, whatever its owner gives what is due upon it is not considered hoarding.
