And when he belittled their matter by dividing their reliance upon their leaders, and their condition is known in that there is no benefit with them nor harm, and the highest matter of the people of Allah is their gathering upon Him, and He is capable of all things. The inclination towards the world is the greatest sign of abandonment, and if it is true, then how about if it is false! He, glorified and exalted is He, turned towards the people of His love, seeking their affection, calling in the name of the faith which He established at the beginning of this book upon spending, not upon acquisition, even if it were true. So how if it were false? And they give the zakat and from what We have provided them, they spend, warning against the foolishness of one who leaves the one who does not ask him for the giving of guidance and the invitation to the religion of truth a reward, while he is a pure messenger who does not speak from desire. And he did not believe him to be a messenger and took one like him as a dependent, while he takes his wealth unjustly, and that necessitates belittling them, not for the absolute glorification of them, let alone the rank which they have lowered themselves to and qualified themselves for, along with their arrogance over them for the purpose of consuming their wealth unjustly. So he said: "O you who have believed," meaning: acknowledge the faith of their caller from denial and from what it leads to. "Indeed, many of the scholars of the Jews" (p-446), meaning: from the scholars of the Jews, "and the monks," meaning: from the ascetics of the Christians, "certainly eat" meaning: they consume, but he expressed it this way because it is the most significant of what is meant by wealth. And a reference to belittling the scholars and monks in that they do what contradicts their status which they have established for themselves. "The wealth of the people unjustly," meaning: by taking it through bribes and various forms of entrapment by displaying asceticism and exaggerating in religion, which brings them wealth through vows and the like, so they hoard it and do not spend it in the way of Allah from those who come to them with the inclination of the hearts of His servants towards them.
And when he informed about their inclination towards the world, he followed it with the news of their turning away from the Hereafter, so he said: "And they hinder" meaning: they plot to divert whoever comes to them with those wealth and others "from the path of Allah," meaning: the religion of the King to whom belongs all command, by distancing them from it by concealing the verses that indicate it from them, fearing for the loss of their worldly affairs with the removal of their leadership if those people were to turn to the truth.
And when most of them hoard that wealth, He, glorified and exalted is He, began with the general hoarding, so it was understood from the first instance the hindrance which is the cause of gathering which is the cause of hoarding. So he said: "And those who" meaning: they do that while they know that those who "hoard" meaning: gather under the ground or above it from their saying to the one who gathers meat: hoarder "the gold and silver" meaning: from them and from others without any purification.
And when it was known that they are the most valuable wealth of the people, and that hoarding is indicative of abundance in them, the pronoun was returned to them in a way that indicates the many types. He said: ﴿And they do not spend it﴾ meaning: they do not spend what is obligatory upon them from this wealth which they have accumulated from these two types, whether together or separately. If he had mentioned it in dual form, it would have implied that their gathering is a condition for the warning. Rather, he returned the pronoun to it without mentioning 'from' - which is intended - for the sake of further encouragement to spend and warning against leaving it. It is permissible for the pronoun to return to silver; because the blame for hoarding it is less due to its abundance. Thus, the blame for hoarding gold is more appropriate because it is superior and more precious than it, unlike the blame for hoarding silver. Al-Harali said in Al-Imran: He placed the spending upon both of them and did not specify it as it was not the case, and they do not spend from it as he said regarding the livestock [Take from their wealth] because these two jewels are the means by which the people of this world attain their benefits. He has diverted them from benefiting from both of them, so their existence has no benefit except through spending them, for they are the idols of this nation. Therefore, breaking them is through their destruction. End of quote.
﴿In the way of Allah﴾ means: the purpose for which the Most High King commanded to spend it therein. ﴿So give them good tidings﴾ means: we say about them due to that mockingly: give them good tidings ﴿of a painful punishment﴾ in exchange for what they desired of joy in achieving their goals.
