And when he informed that he is an exalted one for his saying: and a completer, and an abrogator of their saying: a lower one, he explained that by what is essentially the affair of kings. It is that when a matter arises that they do not wish for anyone to reject; for that is the spirit of the king who does not reward the one who criticizes him except with destruction. He said: "He is" meaning: alone "the one who sent His Messenger" meaning: Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him "with guidance" meaning: to clarify the decisive with miraculous words and actions "and the true religion" meaning: the complete in its clarification and steadfastness, manifestly perfect for every rational being. Then he increased their boldness against the enemy by his saying, explaining his sending: "to make it prevail" meaning: the Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, and the religion - may Allah maintain its prevalence "over all religion." And he presented all of this as a response to one who might have said: how can we fight them when they are in abundance and strength, which is not hidden? He said: why do you not fight them when you do not rely on anyone other than the One under whose dominion everything is? And they only rely on creatures like you; how can you not dare against them when in your fighting, they are only fighting (p-445) their Lord, whom you are obeying? Or how can you not confront them when He is the One who commanded you to fight them to support you and manifest His signs? And perhaps the conclusion with His saying: "and even if the polytheists dislike it" is more eloquent; for disbelief may not involve stubbornness, while polytheism is based on stubbornness by taking rivals. That is: there must be your victory against whoever opposes merely for the sake of opposition or adds to that stubbornness by seeking assistance from whoever he wishes.
